GaryBlauDear Colleagues:

Please join me in becoming part of the International Association for Youth Mental Health (IAYMH) and participating in the fourth IAYMH conference, which will take place in Dublin, Ireland September 24-27, 2017 (www.iaymh2017.com)! By engaging with IAYMH you will join a global community of people who are focusing attention on improving the mental health and well-being of young people and their families around the globe.

In the United States we know that approximately 1 in 5 youth ages 13-18 will experience a serious mental, emotional or behavioral disorder at some point during their life (see http://bit.ly/1QAhr0K). We also know that 50% of adult mental illness is manifested by the age of 14; and 75% by the age of 24 (see http://bit.ly/2oXaqRP). These data underscore the need for early intervention and to create services and systems that are responsive, developmentally appropriate, efficient and effective. We also understand the need to meaningfully engage and give voice to young people and their families, and to develop services and supports that family-driven, youth-guided and culturally and linguistically competent. In the U.S. these values and principles are the foundation for the “system of care” approach (see http://bit.ly/2uyAp8v).

The IAYMH was founded in 2012 “to unite the world’s passion and interest” in youth mental health, and to share current information and resources on best practices. IAYMH shares and promotes common values and interests, including an emphasis on research and evidence, increased access and capacity of services and supports, improvement of care standards, and the importance of youth and family self-determination in achieving their own health needs.

This year’s conference has outstanding plenary and breakout sessions on a wide range of topics that professionals, policy-makers, youth and family members will find interesting and useful (download the programme). And, the chance to network with colleagues and learn about global best practices will be of utmost benefit to you and your organizations. So, please, check out IAYMH and join me at the conference!!
